Disease Prevention
Outbreak Investigation - When an infectious or non-infectious disease strikes in Cottonwood and/or Jackson County we provide investigation and follow-up as directed by Minnesota Department of Health. Our effort would include coordination of resources, contact investigations, immunization of persons at risk, and education. Examples of outbreaks may include:
- Hepatitis
- Meningitis
- Tuberculosis
- STDs
- Chickenpox
- Measles
- Mumps
Protect Yourself - Besides immunizations, the number one way to protect from getting sick, is hand washing. Germs are everywhere, and are not normally visible to the naked eye. By washing your hands often, you cut down the number of bacteria that can potentially make you sick. In a pinch, an alcohol based hand sanitizer is also acceptable to use if soap and water are not readily available. https://www.health.state.mn.us/handhygiene/
Cover Your Cough - over your mouth with a Kleenex when you cough or sneeze, OR cough or sneeze into your upper elbow. Throw your used Kleenex away in the trash. Wash your hands with soap and water, or alcohol based hand sanitizer.
Stay Home if you are Sick - It is recommended to be free of fevers, diarrhea, vomiting for 24 hours before returning to work/school.
